The Louisiana economy is at a fragile point, and decisions by our government matter.

Decisions by state leaders on the tax code, the legal climate and regulations all affect the economy and job creation in our state.

The focus of state leaders is currently fixed on Louisiana’s budget challenges and solving what has become a long-term structural deficit. This is a real problem that needs a smart solution. The causes of the deficit are well-known: the state has a revenue problem, a spending problem and fundamental problems with the structure of the budget itself.

State leaders are currently debating legislation to generate as much as $2 billion in new revenue to fund state and local government operations. Discussions at the Capitol also rightly acknowledge that state spending must be part of the solution, as well as long-term budget reform and cost controls, so that we can provide a more stable and predictable future for our state.

In the upcoming special and regular legislative sessions, the Coalition for a Stronger Economy (CASE) urges the Legislature and administration to:

  1. 1 Adopt a comprehensive approach to resolving the deficit that not only seeks to raise revenue but addresses spending and enacts structural budget reform.
  2. 2 Enact changes that have both a short and long-term impact so that perennial state budget challenges are addressed once and for all.
  3. 3 Tackle the state's so-called sacred cows from ineffective tax exemptions to statutory dedications.
  4. 4 Fix what is broken in government once and for all, undertaking big reforms in expensive government programs like Medicaid, pensions and prisons.
  5. 5 Promote economic growth in a reformed budget that better focuses on statewide priorities, recognizing that governmental decisions should strengthen the economy and advance job creation and prosperity.
